So, desserts don’t usually make it in to my Frugal Friday posts. But drown me in amaretto if this one isn’t frugal.
Mr Chocolate’s parents were coming over for lunch and my thoughts had been else where. The lunch bit was sorted, but it would be nice if there was a little sweetie something to follow it up with. Now what do I have?
some cooking mistake freezer brownie
some old cream
some sad looking strawberries
oh and some chocolate (50%)
Now I hate tossing food out. I can generally give something a new lease of life well after it has looked it’s best. I like the challenge of it, and it let’s me be a little creative in the kitchen. I was a little nervous with this one though, as it wasn’t just the usual culprits eating it.
Hmmm, thinking cap on, and…
Chocolate Hazelnut Surprise
crumble up some freezer brownie
then whip up
300mls of cream that needed using
add a good shake
of some hazelnut meal through it (approx 50g)
1 tsp vanilla into the whipped cream
and then slowly drizzle some
melted dark chocolate (about 100g- I used 50%)
in as well (don’t over whip it)
layer it with your brownie (or an old chocolate/plain cake you may have hanging around)
add a few
chopped up sad looking strawberries on top and then
drizzle a little more chocolate on
So how did it taste?
Did the inlaws suspect anything less than a well planned dessert.
(This is not a recipe. Not really any way. Just use what you have and play. You will probably end up with a lovely tasty surprise.)
Drown me in amaretto too, we still have some freezer brownie mistakes too. These look great.
Wouldn’t we smell delicious in all that amaretto.
Stunning idea, I would not mind a whipped up dessert like that!! c
Looks delicious – YUM-O!!!
L.O.L – I love your lazy yet funny style of cooking. Glad to read a fellow foodie blog (you can check out mine if you like – but it’s not as half as good as yours 🙂 )
berry creative, berry economical and berry delicious..
Very clever, very frugal and very beautiful! Great job, Brydie! 🙂
Yay for frugality. Those look delicious!
Oooh, I always have cooking mistake freezer brownie on hand – seriously! I’ve been trying to get vegan chewy brownies right for ages! This looks so fabulous.
Hop to it than Alisa, you know what you need to do next with those freezer brownies 🙂
I hate throwing things out too. What a great ‘recipe’. I imagine this would work just as well with mangos or bananas.
I too hate wasting food and am forever thinking what I can make out of what’s left. Well done on such good use of what you had to put this delicious looking dessert together…I would be so happy to havce that served up to me!
It seems you managed to be a star daughter-in-law (and wife, and mother), and get in some fun experimenting (in a frugal way no less), and produce a rather amazing looking dessert. In other words, you can have today’s superwoman prize 😀
I am with you — hate to waste desserts, no matter how long it has been neglected 😀
oh my so good so pretty! so frugal! and i love the narrative nature of the un-recipe!
Frugal-yes- but that is just the bonus!
You have strawberries, brownies, hazelnuts and chocolate in there!!!
I WANT some!
Actually, though, I’m not surprised- you are gifted at these kind of treats, Brydie!
I’ve just tagged you to answer the Ten Questions currently being passed around the table! Hope you don’t mind sharing your own answers with the rest of us! 🙂
oh so sorry…left wrong link…correct in the above comment if you like. but here it is…
Thanks spree, that’s really kind…. I’ll see what I can do 🙂
Brilliant idea, and I’m off to check the fridge to see what sort of variations on the theme I can cook up. 🙂
Gosh you are good – looks fantastic. I’m a fan of making ‘stuff’ from whatever we’ve got stocked in the kitchen but nothing never anything as creative as this:)
Definitely frugal! Delicious sounding too. I think I have some freezer brownies, and certainly have some rather standard chocolate cake in there that would do the trick.
I love the feeling you get from using things up that might otherwise have gone to waste – a good warm glow!
Awesome recipe. Looks like it would be delicious 🙂 Thanks so much for sharing.
