freedom

sometimes I give them a lot

sometimes I only give them a whisper

seem to be forever trying to balance this one

  1. It’s a constant struggle and battle of trying to work out whether it should be more or less. We’re away on a farm at the moment and my Alfie is riding quad bikes. I’d really rather wrap him in cotton wool rather than risk an accident but no amount of good parenting can protect your child from every scrap so I’m letting him off the leash a little. But, it’s not easy xx

  2. Growing up- the notion of freedom for me and my sibs was escaping from working in the greenhouse for a couple of hours and roaming about in the fields and streams and the creek that bordered our house. Unsupervised play- rambling about and poking into places where we couldn’t be easily found – that kind of freedom would be considered dangerous and unhealthy in today’s world, I think. But I tried to give it to my sons as they grew up- time away from adults makes children independent and innovative.
I love your photos, especially the floured floor and child at the end.

    • It so does make them independent, innovative, even creative. Just that time to be a…kid. I find it incredibly hard finding that balance when there are simply no outside spaces where I know they are safe. Maybe I’m over thinking it and there will be a time when they get older, maybe.
Loved the image of you rambling through creek beds as a young girl Heidi. xx

  3. Now I look at the last photo and I am curious about if you gave him flour to stomp in or if the flour spilled and then you just let go. Freedom is about trust, wisdom and fear. Trust that kids will do the right thing and that fate will be kind. Wisdom about how good it is for kids to learn. Fear of all that might go wrong. Honestly though I have such a cautious kid that I find myself encouraging her to do things like climb trees because I loved such stuff when I was a kid. (But no fingers in the electric beaters)

    • I frequently have a little ‘helper’ delving into my big bags of flour with whatever instrument is at hand. Some days she gets stopped other days…oh go for it kiddo, knock yourself out…safer at the end of a bag!
