Sunday musings and banana crumble muffins

There is nothing quite as enjoyable as some long weekend musings over a deep cup of coffee, and a muffin or two. Mr Chocolate even indulged me by having a decaf coffee with me, while pretending it was the real deal.

Once we had world politics sorted, discussed the plight of Australian farmers versus big corporations, the annoying-ness of facebook, a spot of fracking thrown in and what we should have for dinner. My mind was let loose on to other matters.

Olive tree in a pot. They look good, but can I make it work given my minimal sun, teeny tiny space and very pale green thumb? It wouldn’t be for ever, but could I keep it happy until we found sunnier pastures down the track?

When does a night time snack turn into an early breakfast?… Just how early can breakfast be?

Tattoos, could you, would you, should you? Is it a pregnancy induced want of mine? I think I’m keen… but then again, maybe it will pass?

Talking birth is a bit like talking religion or politics. Everyone has an opinion and things can get rather heated… aren’t people funny?

How about you? Been musing on anything lately?

As for the muffins to go with your musings, I saw these delectable little goodies- Cranberry and Crumb Top Muffins, and I wanted to play. Actually most of the things Greg and Katherine make, I want to have a crack at. But the muffins were calling, not in a cranberry kind a way, but in a banana kind a way. Actually the bananas had developed quite a tone on them, noisy buggers. Help, my skin is turning brown, and I really need a focus! Cook with me!

Who am I to ignore a helpless banana on a bench, Banana Crumble Muffins they were to be, (and just quietly… they were kind of  delicious.)

Banana Crumble Muffins

125g softened butter

1 tsp vanilla

1 tsp cinnamon

1/2 tsp cardamom

2 tbls honey

1 beaten egg

3 mashed bananas

2 cups self raising flour (300g)

Mix all ingredients together except flour, then fold that through too. Spoon mixture into lined muffin tray.

Crumble Topping

2 tbsp melted butter

2 tbsp dark muscavado sugar (or regular brown sugar)

2 tbsp plain flour

Mix together and spoon mixture 1/2 tsp at a time over muffins.

Bake at 180C for approximately 30 minutes or until light golden.

  1. I love the look of your banana crumble muffins. Muffins are such a great way to start the day. I would love to be ‘musing’ but I’ve had a shocker of a weekend – I’ve had to work long hours both days. I need some time to muse.

  2. Sounds like some good musings! And I have a real thing for crumble muffins. That topping can take bland to amazing…although these look like they’d be pretty good topping-less too 🙂 I don’t think I’ve ever tried banana crumble but I now see it would work wonderfully.

  3. bananas are like that aren’t they! Mine often call for help! Even when I want an alternative fruit for baking but they usually add great flavour

I often muse about facebook being annoying and today was musing about how old fashioned walkmans must seem these days – makes me feel out of touch as that was the last portable stereo I owned!

  4. Oh i understand the call of the banana, and then I put them in the freezer (for a banana cake one day, but i don’t eat cakes often) so then after a long while they are defrosted and thrown to the chooks.. such a process.. the guilt of abandoning a banana .. c

  5. I’m so glad to hear I’m not the only one with musings that scatter all about… I sometimes think this is my best source for blog writing:) Re tattoos… my son just got his first and now is wanting a second (I begged him to wait) I think they’re addicting, so I’ve heard. These muffins, as well, would be addicting.. I love your photos of that yummy crumbly topping!!

  6. Think seriously about a tatoo, they don’t age well. I don’t like them at all, but perhaps I am showing my age.
I don’t like Facebook at all…. once again it could be my age.
    What is fracking??
I am planning to put an olive tree in a huge pot beside the house in Vergemoli.

  7. Oh my I’ve missed so much Brydie haven’t I? 🙂
I didn’t even realise you’re pregnant! Congrats to you both.
Sure does sound like a lovely way to muse.
My musings have been pretty much with myself, and mostly about where to go with my creativity, blogs and online stores. In a tricky space at the mo, but I’m sure I’ll work it all out eventually! 🙂

Have just done a quick run through some posts I’ve missed here, and with all the delicious salads, tasty chilli concoctions, dreamy lemon delight, beautiful jewellery and spicy baby wear, I’ve had a lovely journey! x

  8. Snap, Brydie! We had some crumble muffin action here this week too..for lunchboxes. Banana and oatmeal with crumble and apple/oatmeal/crumble..freaky!

My musings for you today would be:

What would cityhippyfarmgirl think if she had a ‘leap baby’ on the 29th?

Should I save towards a teeny tiny spinning wheel or a fancy camera?

    and..

What on earth is for dinner tonight?

Not a fan at all of facebook, I have 3 tattoos..they’re so common now but think about where on your body you get it – you may want to cover it up if going somewhere…’posh’!

Olive tree in a pot…hmmm they are supposed to be happy in a dry situation..although have you considered perhaps a bay tree? They are ridiculously slow growing and would probably do quite well in a pot and would still be teensy in a few years if you decided to move..just a thought 😉

  9. Mmmm. These look awesome and I love your red papers on the muffins! We’ve been on a banana bread kick using up older bananas…today’s was one with chocolate chips added. Next one will definitely be trying these crumb topped muffins.

  10. I really should sandwich my mouth on the subject of tattoos, like Debra I think they age decidedly badly but that’s prolly my age and prejudices.

As for Facebook — I don’t get it, I am trying to, but I don’t get it.

Banana crumble muffins, those I get. 🙂

  11. Are your muffin holders silicone? I have some that look just like that!
Fracking is causing some earthquake activity here in Ohio.
Facebook is annoying- but most social networks are, imo!
Talking about religion is what I do with my husband most of the time.
Thinking about birth is an exercise in joy!
I have a bay tree in a pot and it grows wonderfully! No olive tree- but it’s a thought!
Your muffins look wonderful- but i think I’ll make the cranberry ones!
    Great post!

  12. Love your musings …. and muffin recipe is going straight to the farmstay breakfast recipes!! We shall call it ‘City Hippy Banana Crumble Muffins’
Olive tree in a pot…..My musings are: a)They do grow slowly
    b) They live up to 100 yrs (which could be long enough for you to get your farm) c)I would start with a pot that is big …but not too big that you can’t get it down the stairs and into a removal van d)if you knew where your ‘land ‘ was now, you could go and secretly plant an olive tree there ready for you to arrive now and d)the olive tree is so much more than just a plant in a pot ….it is a living reminder to believe in your dream .d)Give it a go.

  13. I hear ya! Our conversations follow a very similiar thread. I have been pondering the coming election, our spring garden, why does my new rooster begin crowing at 4:00 a.m. and continue til morning?, time to get our pigs harvested, fruit trees… so many things.

  14. I’ve been musing on the emptying of our nest. First one out of home two weeks ago, second one away on a trip, leaving just one behind and me worrying about redundancy. Oh, and also worrying about who will eat the goodies when the baking urge comes upon me – my hips just can’t carry any more!

  15. Just popped over to check the latest. It seems you haven’t answered anyone for the last two days – does that mean action is happening on the baby front? I truly hope that things go well for you Brydie – sending best of wishes your way. Mariana xx
