Bubbles Recipe
Glycerine 1 part
Dishwashing liquid 2 parts
Water 7 parts
(Recipe is approximate. You may have to play with the ratios a little.)
Most kids get a kick out of bubbles. Actually I like bubbles, so perhaps there are a few adults out there too that would be keen for a bubble recipe. I just use my kids as an excuse to use them.
Bubbles love a wet environment. So if it’s humid, rainy kind of weather, perfect for bubbles. In the bath, with the bathroom door shut (trapping that moist air in ) perfect for bubbles. Snowing outside…I have no idea, but give it a go. It could be perfect for bubbles. When the bubbles pop straight away they are drying out, the glycerine helps to stop that, and the moisture in the air as well.
Make your mixture up and leave it a few hours, or even over night (I’m not sure why, but it seems to work.)
You can use anything as your bubble maker. We had an empty container that had been given to us previously, but an old wire coat hanger twisted in to a circle can work just as well. Bigger bubbles!
Now go get to those bubbles.

* Where to buy glycerine from? Your local chemist. Not expensive and will do you quite a lot of bubbles.

Beautiful big bubbles! If you can get your hands on some US dishwashing detergent (Joy or Dawn), you’ll get even bigger ones (although they’ll kill your lawn when they burst – don’t ask me how I know.. :)).

I knew there had to be an extra ingredient to these bubbles – whenever we used to refill our bubble bottles that were bought for us with just dishwashing liquid and water, they never were as good – if I only knew about the glycerine.

For the dog that has everything, there is a ridiculous product which consists of a bubble gun and a little bottle of edible bubble mix which is smoky bacon flavoured. My dogs played with it one year when they were puppies. What do you think they used instead of the washing up liquid? I have no idea at all. 😀

When I am working at my job with little ones’ language, I always pull out the bubbles…it seems to be a favorite first word.

Kids love them don’t they. I don’t think I’ve ever met a kid that doesn’t get excited over bubbles.

we used to make this up for our kids. Then we’d shape a metal wire coat hanger into a big circle and swish them through the air to make huge bubbles!
Celia is right about Dawn and Joy making big bubbles- only maybe our grass is more durable? Never noticed it dying from the residue.

Heidi, Brydie, we had one of those giant bubble kits which made 6′ bubbles – huge enormous things. We could never make it work with our Aus dishwashing liquids (even with glycerine), so friends brought back bottles of Joy for me from the US. At one of the boys’ birthday parties, we had a big bucket and huge bubbles being made on the lawn for ages. The kids were beside themselves with excitement!
A week later, where the giant bubbles had burst, the usually fairly sturdy buffalo turf was white and dead, in nice round patches. There was a lot of detergent used though, so it’s probably an uncommon occurrence. 🙂

That last photo is a rippa! Bubbles are much fun, although I do worry about them popping on the plants …the guy who sold us his ‘secret recipe’ stated that he only uses Morning Fresh, which I don’t think is too friendly on the garden. Oops! I guess I just disclosed his vital ingredient, ha! Thankfully it didn’t burn them like Celia’s lawn..yikes! 🙂

We use Earth Choice and seems to work fine. The key is leaving it to sit awhile and it being a moist environment to work with. Bathroom works wonders!

Good memories Brydie. Kris & I were totally into bubbles back in the day & would’ve thought you a hero for a post like this back then. I didn’t know about the glycerine but we found out that Dad’s Truck wash didn’t make a bad bubble 🙂

Lovely fun bubbles, who doesn’t like them. I went to a party last year where there was a large bubble blower – the adults spent most of the time watching the kids use it or trying to take it from the kids to use themselves.

I’m a big fan of the ol’ bubble and have various friends who will bring along a bucket to any event, as you well know Brydie. But the real question is, how do I get bigger bubbles in my sourdough????

LOVE!!! I always use dishwashing liquid and its far from perfect for bubbles. Hooray, I’ll be making some of this mixture up in the morning. I’m sure I’ve got some glycerine here somewhere.

I love your post! My kids were blowing bubbles a week or so ago and the chooks were chasing them and snapping at the bubbles same way they chase moths. Expressions of disgust were a classic! Kinda like their reaction to snails (they hate snails)! Thx for the bubble recipe 🙂
